Promoting democracy, that's a phrase that until recently seemed alien to our political culture. Pro-democracy demonstrators fight for political freedom against autocrats and dictators all over the world. As a term, it fits naturally for Egypt, for the Arab Spring, for the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, all of this sounds natural. But in America? Really?

During the Trump impeachment hearings, one of the quotes most often used was from Benjamin Franklin. As he was walking out of Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention in 1787, someone shouted out, "What have we got? A republic or a monarchy?" To which Franklin responded, "A republic, if you can keep it." Thomas Jefferson, who had a flair for the dramatic, expressed a related sentiment by declaring, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

This wisdom is as true today as it was then. Unless we actively resist the tyrants amongst us, we really could lose our democracy. The articles below provide a bit of context for the struggle we must wage.

Why Democracy: For 2024 & Beyond

If the Democrats lose control of the Senate, fail to retake the House, and lose the Presidency in 2024, Republicans are certain to use their power to reverse everything the Democrats have accomplished under President Biden. Policies would be weakened and programs underway to address our most pressing problems would be greatly scaled back or defunded altogether. How far Republicans would go depends mostly on how much power they had gained. In the worst case, if Republicans in the current mold were to take both houses and the Presidency in 2024, it is impossible to predict when rationality might return to the United States government. More >>

A Change in Direction is Required

Success for our Country requires a real improvement in both present conditions and future prospects for all our citizens. To prevail over authoritarian temptations, Democrats must abandon the indiscriminate demonization of conservative voters. We must return to our roots in serving the interests of the working class, in particular the lower half of earners. We must protect economic prosperity and security for the broad middle class. And finally, we must fully embrace the reality of a multi-racial and multi-ethnic democracy by fighting harder than ever to defeat discrimination in all its many forms. A Radically New Attitude: Respect

To be successful in building a politically stable majority supporting change, we need a radically new attitude. Many liberals and progressives have vilified the Trump voters – and sometimes conservative voters in general – and we will need to win support from at least some of them to succeed. We too often regard all of them with distain. We paint all of them with the same brush, and we call them stupid, call them racists or sexists or similar terms of condemnation. We disrespect them blatantly, and they fully understand this. To have any chance of winning over some of them, our attitude needs to be transformed by empathy and understanding into an attitude of respect. Prosperity for Everyone

Another critical pillar of Democrat’s political success must be to make our governments at all levels serve the core interests of the entire population, but most centrally, the bottom half of earners. Right now, half of our fellow citizens are struggling just to get by, and they often see little hope of meaningful change through voting for Democrats. This half of our population owns only about 2.5 percent of all wealth and earns less than 15 percent of all income. To win the real and lasting political support from this half of our citizens, Democrats should aim to increase their share of wealth 10-fold and their share of income to at least 30 percent. More >>

Fight Discrimination & Build Solidarity

The final pillar of our success going forward is fighting and overcoming the bias and discrimination that divides our society into factions unable to cooperate, to make common cause. This means dealing with racism, sexism, and a range of other biases and related discrimination involving age, religion, sexual orientation, and social class. We must ensure that men and women of all races and backgrounds can participate fully in the much more widely shared prosperity we must create. More >>

Needed: A Stronger & More Effective Democracy

Without a well-functioning democracy, we will be unable to cope with rapidly mounting challenges. At the same time, a dysfunctional democracy will be unable to recognize and grasp opportunities. Trapped inside our broken system, we face mounting problems, significant although often unrecognized opportunities, and all of it made much more difficult by the ever accelerating and unrelenting pace of change, change that unmoors and disorients even as it delivers a rush of thrills and a plethora of wild promises. Why It is Essential to Support Activists
