Advancing Voting Rights

Tens of millions of Americans are routinely and not so routinely denied the right to vote. Americans in Washington and Puerto Rico aren't able to vote in national elections. Formerly incarcerated people are often denied the right to vote. People eligible to become citizens are having their applications delayed, and this, if it continues, could deny them a vote in the critical 2024 elections. And then there are the seemly countless schemes to suppress the vote by making registration and voting more difficult.

The suppression of voting rights is fundamentally un-American and anti-democracy, and most American's recognize this. Still, we must engage and support the battles to protect and advance voting rights everywhere they are being denied, and these days, that seems like most states where Republicans are in charge.

National Partnership for New Americans

This is a coalition, organized and led by immigrants, that includes more than three-dozen advocacy organizations working on immigrant needs and rights at the local, state, and federal levels. A key focus is to clear the obstructed path to citizenship - thousands of citizenship applications are currently backlogged - for eligible immigrants through their Campaign to Tear Down the Second Wall. Their nationwide effort encourages new Americans who are eligible to naturalize to do so in time to vote in 2024. Their Cities for Citizenship program aims at increasing citizenship among eligible U.S. permanent residents and encouraging cities to invest in citizenship programs. Any city can become involved. Advancement Project

A next generation, multi-racial civil rights organization, the Advancement Project is rooted in the great human rights struggles for equality and justice. They work to fulfill America’s promise of a caring, inclusive, and just democracy by employing innovative tools and strategies to strengthen social movements and achieve high-impact policy change. The Project’s key issues are Voting Rights, Policing and Criminalization, and Education Justice. Their website offers a rich menu of resources, including reports, fact sheets, action kits, and tips for voters in several key states.

VOTE: Voice of the Experienced

VOTE is a grassroots Louisiana organization founded and run by formerly incarcerated people, their families, and their allies. They build power through community organizing, policy advocacy, and civic engagement. Their work is focused on Voting Rights, Medical Rights, Employment and Housing Rights, and related Policy Reforms. They also offer a series of Research Reports as well as Data and Fact Sheets about the 50,000 people behind bars in Louisiana.
