Ensuring Transparency in Elections
Transparency may be understood as visible or verified fairness and honesty. This visibility and verification will be needed if we are to restore trust in the democratic process as honest and fair. Manipulation, election rigging schemes, hiding who pays for dishonest ads, all these transgressions and more are business as usual.
Some of the challenge of making elections transparent and accountable is simply to make publicly available information accessible to ordinary citizens and journalists without deep-pocketed employers. Toward that end, volunteers with programming skills and people to be researchers are needed.
OpenElections
Promoting honest and open certified election results for everyone. OpenElections is working to create the first free, comprehensive, standardized, linked set of election data for the United States, including federal and statewide offices. The current options for election data can be difficult to find and use or financially out-of-reach for most journalists and many others. For this continuing effort, OpenElections is seeking volunteers with programming skills and people to be researchers to help identify and format results data for each state.
