Statehood for Washington D.C.
Background
Washington D.C. has a population larger than three states, and yet its predominantly black residents are denied both full local self-determination and the voting Congressional representation typically associated with citizenship. It has a mostly non-voting member in the House and no representation at all in the U.S. Senate.
Advocates argue that there is no logical reason to deny statehood to Washington D.C. They see the roots of Congressional opposition as resting in both a lack of public understanding and support as well as in overt partisanship among Republicans.
